1985 mariner 75 hp fuel pump

Hi all. I am new to outboards but I have been wroking on cars along time. I have a 1985 mariner 75 hp with triangle feul pump. I tested the fuel pressure with my MAC fuell pressure guage and it only had 1.5 psi while cranking the motor so I ordered a quicksilver check valve kit off of here. Today was pretty nice so I went out in the garage and installed the kit (check valves, diaphram, and gaskets). I did notice the kit came with a little spring and a cap but when I took mine apart it didnt have these so I put it back on the motor and hooked up my guage and im still only getting 2 psi while cranking and the pulse doesn't seem that strong. Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks in advance.

Shane

They're low pressure diaphragm pumps. 2 psi at only cranking speed sounds fine. These pumps just deliver fuel to the carbs, and the fuel pressure needs to stay low enough so that it doesn't overcome the float valves. I would just run it and see what happens.

Thanks for the reply! I feel much better about it now! Its been getting a little warmer here so I have the itch to be in the garage getting here ready for spring. I've tested the 7/16 spark gap and also has good compression on all 4. Next is clean and new gaskets on the carbs and a impeller kit then run in my big tank. Im trying to.find a test prop so I can put a load on it but im not having much luck.

Ok thanks Jeff! Do you have any pointers when I clean the carbs? I know setting the float height is important and have the spec from my manual. Is a good place to start with teh mixture screws 1 1/2 out before I start it after I put it back together?

Good start, but be sure to readjust the idle screws after the motor is warmed up and in gear--I leave mine on the trailer, or tie it to the dock so it can't move at the time.

When you get the best idle setting, add 1/4 to 1/2 turn OUT (CCW) to prevent bogging on sudden throttle up.
