Hello, I have a Johnson 9.9 sailmaster that I'm attempting to rebuild or for now get a spark. I just got the manual and have come upon a discrepency in it(or is it me). The engine identifies as an 85 and in the manual it says that it should be a 3 wire out of the powerpack. Mine is a 5 wire which suggests an 86. Anyone have any thoughts?
Thanks, Paul
P.s. have never been on any forums so I'll apologise ahead of time for any mistakes that will undoubtly occur.

can you get the model number off your motor and post it for us? if you have a five wire use the test for the five wire system.
in your model number if ypu have a CO in it it is a 1985, if it has a CD it's an 1986 model. epx....J10RCOM 1985 1985......
Also what are the problems with this motor we may be able to help.

Hello, The s# is j10selcom. The motor I bought for cheap with the expectation of rebuilding it so I can fix them when they break.(which seems to be quiite frequently when I charter)I don't think it has been run in a long time. I found nut shells under the engine in the housing and a lot of chewed up wires. I've heard that squirriels and other rodents like small engines to live in and eat as well. My goal is to get a spark and evaluate weather it is worth it from there. The problem right now is that I'm into it for a manual, power pack and I'm pretty sure it needs 1 coil and a starter switch. At the very least I'll have to stay with the Sailmasters so i can utilize the manual and other parts if this doesn't work.
Thank You, Paul
