1985 Johnson 70 Rectifier & Stator

I recently had my brand new battery go totally dead. Upon investigation I found all the potting had burned/melted out of the rectifier. So it was obvious that needed replacing. I got out my motor manual and bought a multimeter and did the stator resistance test and found it to be bad also. So did the rectifier fail and ruin the stator or vice-versa? Or might there be some other undiscovered malfunction that caused them both to fail? I have ordered the new stator and rectifier.

The most likely reason for the failures is that the battery was connected with the polarity reversed. That will fry the rectifier quicker than you can say "oh bother"

Damage to the stator coil ?????? Maybe as the result of then running with a damaged rectifier. ???????

Thank you for the quick response. It could very well be this is a self inflicted newbie mistake. The wiring harness on my boat is like a chinese puzzle and leads are not marked or color coded. I will trace the lead from ground back to the battery compartment and then make up and attach some permanent tags to the leads. While I feel foolish for doing something so stupid to a boat I have owned for 35 years I always feel more comfortable when the true root cause of a problem is determined. Without the information you provided I could have ruined my replacement parts as well. Thanks again.
