Hey guys, long time lurker, first time poster. Got my lower broke all the way down to diagnose a shifting issue. Ended up being the gearcase shifter assembly. The ears that pull and push the dog clutch snapped off. After looking online today- part unavailable. Dang. Whatever, I'm not gonna sit around hoping one pops up on eBay, gonna weld the ears back on and send it.

Moving on... I saw a video that was talking about the RETAINING SCREW found on the lower unit around the water intake.. Specifically part number

0324852 - Retaining Screw .

Can anyone give me any additional information on this retaining screw and tell me exactly what it does? I do believe I messed with it at some point and I want to assure myself that I didn't screw anything up in the process of possibly removing it a few years ago. I don't recall seeing any extra little parts in the prop housing when I tore the lower down. I do still have the screw currently installed where it is supposed to be, just want to be sure I haven't caused myself more of a headache. Looking up inside the lower, I can't even make out what this screw does or where it goes.

Thanks guys!

If in Canada ---evinrudeparts.ca---Might be acle to help find that part.-------That screw located the pinion bearing.----You can take it out and back in all day long.

Is somebody shifting the control box with the motor not running?----Perhaps pumping the throttle to try and start this motor ?----That part just does not break with no reason.

There is no telling. I bought the boat a few years back and it wasn't in the best condition. I have yet to actually put it on the water since I've owned it. I got it as a project and have slowly but surely gotten the boat where I wanted it. Now I'm on to the outboard, going through it and making sure all is right before I get it out on the water. I rebuilt the carbs and installed a new throttle remote. Had the muffs on when I was testing the engine and found it was really hard to get it to go into gear. Pulled the lower and broke it down and found that. Only real issue I found other than a broken snap ring closest to the gears.

so taking that screw out wont mess anything up so long as i put it back in? say i wanted to paint my lower while i have it tore down. i can remove that screw without any consequences as long as I reinstall it?

As clearly stated in post #2 you can take that screw out 10 times and put it back in 10 times.-----Nothing can go wrong doing that !!
