"Hi,

I just discovered this site; lots of great help and info here!

Here's my issue:

I'm restoring an old 17' wellcraft cc with an allegedly rebuilt 85' 90hp evinrude. The wiring on this boat was a rats nest, so I ripped it all out (carefully-last fall). Before I picked up the boat, I heard it running (just fine, last september).

The motor has been sitting since then.

Remounted it last night. Got it to fire over fine today. Got a question on the grey wire...is this for the tach?

How do I know what wires are for the neutral safety switch?

Regarding the compression, all cylinder were between 110 and 112...does this sound like a rebuilt engine?

lastly, This motor did not come with tilt. The controls have it. I picked up a used, 3 wire set up. Someone said I need solenoids or relays to go between the control wires and the unit. Thoughts on this? Where to acquire, where they mount, and how to hook up?

Thanks for any help offered!"

"Mine is a 2 wire pump so I was able to make my own using relays bought off ebay. I don't know all the parts they sell here, but there is a 1991 tilt/trim unit with wiring on ebay right now."

"kyle,
I'm sorry I didn't notice you said you had a 3 wire pump/motor. All I know is my trim pump is 2 wires and will work with relays. Jwbmarine is right you need a solenoid set up."

"Got it. Excellent. Sent you a question as well, where does it mount on the unit. Also, this motor has sat for a a few years, VRO disconnected, but fired right up. What's the risk of running without a carb rebuild?"

"Take the time this weekend for a carb rebuild to have the peace of mind. This is a simple procedure that can really save your motor if the carbs are plugged. IF they aren't plugged, oh well, at least you are certain they are in good shape.

You can take a chance, but when it's so easy and only takes a couple of hours, I don't think it's worth the risk.

Is a carb rebuild something an amatuer can handle? What's a kit cost? Will the settings get messed up in the rebuild process? What am I looking for as far as problems from the idle time without use?

Would bad carbs be the source of a dirty oil/gassey mix pooling under the motor (right under the prop) after a short start or attempt to start?
