On this engine You have to remove the water intake screens at the gearhouse and split the rod there. Push up the nut on upper rod and remove the plastic keeper (careful!) to get the rod out of the nut.

I guess my terminology was a bit out. The "rod" I talking about is I believe what your refering to as the "upper rod". I have already disconnected the lower unit and the drive shaft. The upper rod remains inplace and has the upper portion of the water pump housing on it. How do you get the upper portion of the rod free up to replace the plastic portion of the water pump? FYI I went to buy a manual and all local dealers were out of it....trying to get the boat together for the holiday and the family

1: Remove water screens.
2: Split the rod.
3: Push up the nut on upper rod, remove the keeper on the rod, push the nut down again, and loosely put it back on lower rod.
Take down gearcase, and upper rod will slide through water-pump housing."
