Does anyone know the difference between the 1985 20 and the 1985 25 horsepower Evinrude? I think 85 was the first year for the 32cu in 20 horsepower. My information shows 47D as the main jet and the same carburetor body number, in both the 20 and the 25 horsepower. ???
Thanks, Tim

???----Well ----I am working on a 79 model 20 HP today.-----So this 1985 as first year is wrong !------The carburetor has a plastic restrictor on the 79 to reduce airflow and derate it.

Yeah that's funny because I thought it was a 79 too but this marine engine site does not list a 1979 20 horsepower as you can see in the screenshot here. So I will look for any type of a restrictor in the carburetor throat.

Same block part number and same main jet (47D). 1985 was when everything went to hp ratings at the gearcase. Maybe the 20 was rated at the prop and the 25 was rated at the flywheel. I bought a new Merc (402) in 1984 that was a 40hp that they just slapped 35 hp stickers on. No change to the engine at all.

I would have to look at the " old time " micro-fiche cards to see the difference.-----No time for that at the moment.---The 20 HP was only marketed in Canada.----Have the factory brochures that clearly indicate this.

Intake restricted.I own a 1985 20hp.Well, it use to be a 20hp,not anymore.

Yeah I measured the intake bore on a 20 and 25 and both were the same size so I don't know for sure. I looked for that insert restrictor that razor mansions but it was not in this motor and it appeared to be a virgin. I switched it over to electric start and cobbled in a neutral safety switch so the guy wouldn't kill himself. And I routed the wires in from the bottom of the lower cowling instead of in from the front.

Someone swapped out the intake most likely or enlarged it instead of getting a 25 intake.I bought the 25 intake and did a swap. Ended up going the 30hp conversation route later on.Did you put a lanyard kill switch on it also after the pictures?I did on mine. Cheap safety upgrade.
