I am seeing a lot of white smoke on startup. It isn't thick, but seems to be a lot of it. I haven't run this very long because I have a broken head bolt and 95# compression on #2 cylinder, so I don't know if it clears up after it is warm. I am just getting this running after sitting about 9 years. If is running rough and I will replace the head gaskets and water jacket gaskets. I will most likely be changing the head bolts as well. The engine looks like it has had leaks around the head gasket and water jackets. I don't believe it has ever seen salt as it is a California/Arizona boat that was run in the Colorado, Lake Havasu, and Lake Mohave. I am pretty sure any corrosion is from water leak, but that seems a little extreme that the water actually would leak out of the head and water jacket.

This is a 19ft Sleekcraft shallow V, so unlikely it seen salt, but ouch, maybe the Salton Sea

I will also be rebuilding the carbs as well. I am just wondering if anyone would have any thoughts on this other than a water leak to the cylinder causing steam etc. I will be greatful for any thoughts. I will try to keep posting as I learn things and do testing. I don't want to be one of those guys that figure it out and never post again with the answer to the problem. I got CRS though, lol :p

also with this white smoke is a thick fuel smell, which I know can be unspent fuel burning in the exhaust. I do get some popping and backfiring

that is what I was thinking. I guess fix that and see if it clears up and then worry about it. I am wondering if water in the cylinder while running could leak into the crankcase and cause problems or is this what is called hydrolocking?

Hydroblock....... Water cannot be compressed. If enough water exists in a cylinder, since the piston cannot compress it, the engine will lock up until the water is removed.

ok thanks, so it is something that can easily be repaired (most of the time). I am not sure a lot of people know what it is because I see it gets thrown around a lot on craigslist and don't mention anything about the problem, just the symptoms

so I got the powerhead gasket set ordered. Hopefully it will be here on Friday and can get it installed next Friday or Saturday. I am pretty excited.
