Help - fishing season is going

Help - fishing season is going fast. I had my SOLEX carb rebuilt and she starts right up and revs up but will not idle. If the fuel pump is bad would it run at all? Head was supposed to have just been rebuilt when I got the boat (from a friend) but an "expert" says it could be a valve seal. I would prefer an easy out. Oh ya - tried fresh gas right from a gas can also but still no go. HELP!!

"1) Make sure you run the engine at fast idle until it reaches operating temperature. Those engines do not like to idle while they are cold.

2) Make sure you adjust the idle mixture properly, then adjust the idle speed. If the idle mixture is improperly adjusted (too lean), the engine will stall.

3) Check that the ignition timing is set correctly: 6º-10ºBTDC depending on which gas you use.

4) Make sure the carb is tight and sealed at the intake manifold. An air leak could cause you idling problems.

5) If all the above fails, make sure the timing belt was installed correctly (i.e. is not one tooth off or more).

6) Do not forget to throw the points and condenser in the garbage and install a Pertronix #2842 electronic ignition kit, you'll be glad you did. You will probably experience a much better starting (even in cold, damp conditions) and a smoother, steady idling.

Good luck."

"El Pescador,
This is the same issue I am having with my AQ260A with a rochester 4bbl carb. This is my first boat so i dont have a lot of experience with this. you say to check idle mixture screw adjustment. how does one know when it is adjusted correctly? Thank you for any advice you may be able to give me."
