I took the starter off to clean the carb but now I can't figure out how it goes back on. Slipped the spring hook in the slot with the cord unwound, then turned the reel counterclockwise but it didn't work. the lever on top doesn't move back & forth either. My instructions aren't very clear so could someone please explain. Thank you.

Within the following, you should be able to deduce your needs.

(Manual Starter Cord Installation)
(This pertains to the vertical type of Manual Starters such as the 9.5hp and later 4.5/6/8hp models etc)
(J. Reeves)

1 - Have a pair of vice grips handy set so that they will grab the top of the starter spindle tightly but will not damage it.

2 - Using a large screwdriver inserted into the top of the starter spindle, wind the starter in a counter clockwise direction 12 to 14 turns, stopping so that the cord locking slot is facing the away from the engine.

3 - Lock the spindle in that position with the vice grips, letting the vice grips lay against the flywheel.

4 - Insert the cord as needed and make sure it is retained properly at that slot.

5 - Feed the cord out the starter cord hole at the front of the engine and attach the handle.

6 - Grip the cord tightly so that the spindle cannot spin around rapidly, then release the vice grips.

7 - Allow the cord to be withdrawn slowly around the spindle.

Thousands of parts in my remaining stock. Not able to list them all. Let me know what you need and I'll look it up for you. Visit my eBay auction at:

IMG_1263.jpgIMG_1262.jpgI put a 5/32" nylon cord on the spool but it won't rewind like it should and night be in the way of the rachet so it won't go into reverse. It grabs intermittently if the handle is released slowly. The cord is overiding itself towards the bottom and at the top. Thanks

Is this recognized / factory starter cord or stretchy hardware store stuff ?----------And I do not think the link on the carburetor needs that bend in it either.----What ratchet are you speaking of ??

It's a stretchy hardware cord. Do you know what diameter is should be> The other white cord the hardware store carries looks a little thick. The ratchet pivots on the top plate and should keep it from shifting into reverse until the grip is moved to start position. The link hasn't been damaged.

???-------No, no-- I believe that ratchet / lever is there on top of the starter to prevent you from starting the motor with throttle too far advanced.

Full details of this starter will be found in the manual at http://boatinfo.no/lib/evinrude/manuals/1971-1989johnsonevinrude.html#/0

beginning on page 516 http://boatinfo.no/lib/evinrude/manuals/1971-1989johnsonevinrude.html#/516

The rope spec will be found in Appendix A21 http://boatinfo.no/lib/evinrude/manuals/1971-1989johnsonevinrude.html#/606
(FWIW 59½ " by [SUP]1[/SUP]/[SUB]8[/SUB]" diameter) Nylon ( polyamide) appears to be recommended

The latch on the top is as stated above, by Racerone, to prevent the starter being operated with the throttle open beyond the correct setting.

The recoil spring is prewound by 16½ turns before fitting the rope. (paragraph 9-10.7)

It is identical to the starter on my 1984 6 hp

I got it running the way it is but it might work better with the 1/8". Great manual. Wish I could download it! Thanks. Bob

That Library Link is a great source, Thank You vics.

You could always check out a hard copy from your local Library for long enough for most tasks. If they don't have it on shelf, they can get it if you ask.
