"I recently aquired a 1985 30

"I recently aquired a 1985 30 hp evinrude model #30ELCOA that ran fine for about an hour with no problems. When I went to crank it again, I heard a hum for the motor. Removing the case I see that the starter just spins but does not raise to engage in turning over the engine. I am new here so I an clueless where to initiate trouble shooting. Any help would be great."

"Raise the bendix gear manually so that it is engaging the starter, then try the elsctric start method.

If it cranks the engine as it should, then the bendix gear is merely sticking. If this is the case, clean the vertical spline taper area with WD-40.

If still no good, remove, clean all cables pertaining to the electric start system, making sure that every connection is clean and tight.

I assume that the battery is a top notch battery and fully charged?

To test the starter directly, simply run the battery cables straight to the starter."
