1985 30 HP Johnson

A newbie here and I need some

A newbie here and I need some help. Have a 1985 30 HP Johnson tiller steering. The water pump is the original and I have attempted to replace it with a new one. The impeller I bought came with a plastic key where as the original one had a small roller bearing to fit into the impeller.
The shaft on the motor has no slot for the key to fit in. Does the the plastic key simply ride against the rounded shaft and dies this turn the water pump. I am perplexed as to what makes the impeller turn when the motor starts. HELP! HELP!

"I'm with you on this one.

"I'm with you on this one. I never did like the nylon insert. Always looked cheap to me. Having said that, I have never had a problem with one, and never heard of anyone who has. OMC must have known what they were doing. Where the impeller rides there is a flat spot on the drive shaft. Best way to visualize the whole thing is to examine it more carefully. Take a look inside the impeller at the spot where the wedge goes, and place the wedge in there. You will see that it goes one way (only) and you will get the idea. (Curved edge of wedge goes toward impeller, flat portion toward the shaft) Notice that there is a leading edge on the wedge, and a trailing one. Make sure you get them right. I use a trick with the impeller that others may not endorse. I use a cable tie and put it around the impeller. I then fold the vanes in (make sure you fold them in the right direction) and tighten the tie as I go. When I am done, the vanes are all folded in, and the pump housing easily fits over the impeller. You work the housing over the impeller, gently work the tie down slowly, and then you cut the tie and remove it, and then push the housing home. I find this to be the easiest way. Make sure you use fairly wide ties if you try this, otherwise they might tend to cut the impeller."
