im not very familiar with boat

im not very familiar with boat engines. this is my first one. and i have a busted lower unit. the engine will go into gear but the shaft to the prop is stripped. i cant find anyone to work on an engine this old. so i must do the work myself but i dont know how to get the shaft out. i have asked a couple of people for help but the description of the prop shaft after the prop is off does not match what im looking at. i dont know how to describe it. when i pull the prop off the shaft comes through a three pointed star sprocket like housing. if that makes sense. if there is anyone with any kind of experience with this year engine please im desperate for help. this is my first boat and i would love to have it on the water real soon.

"Walter, that the point star you notice is the thrust hub. The process to remove the bearing carrier on this lower unit is a little to long and complicated to post here.

I would really suggest you invest the 30 or so bucks in a "Selocs" manual for your motor. The manual referred to as "Volume 1 Tune-up and repair manual" for 1965-1991 1 and 2 cylinder models has step by step instructions (including pictures, tips and tricks) for your lower unit.

Your model, if an 85, is a 25 XD, with a lower unit "type C".

I really wouldn't go at it without the book - you could end up cracking or destroying something which would render things too expensive to fix compared to the cost of a new motor...

I would ask first though, are you sure it's the prop shaft that is stripped and not simply the prop hub itself? What is the motor doing? revving up but the prop is slipping????"

"Sorry, put the wrong model in there as you referred to the motor as an 85 - the 20 horse wasn't built in 85 (they had an 18 or 25 horse)- do you have a serial number..."
