Just bought this motor J20CRCOS.It started easily and water pump was working good.Went in and out of forward and reverse.The first "C" means counter rotation, not sure what that is about since it rotates the same as my 9.9 johnson and it has no "C" in after the HP in the model number.Any ideas on that?Guy said it was an 84 but quide says 85, no biggie..Said it was stored for a long time.Not sure of course and he seemed like a descent guy.Said he got it new and thought it was a long shaft.It of course is not.First thing I did now which I was concerned about and asked him was if the gear oil was changed recently?He said he did not know when it was done last since it was in a shed supposedly somewhere for a long time and said he would check it also if he was keeping it.I took off the screws and what tiny bit of oil came out was like molasses.May of had a teaspoon of oil come out.UGGHH!!!Small amount of water drops came out!UGGHH again!Guess I fill it and run it and drain again.How much oil do these take apprx?thanks

You fill the lower unit from the bottom drain hole until it comes out the top hole. That C does not stand for counter rotation here is the breakdown of your model#

J=Johnson
20= HP
CR= Canada Derated rope start
C=8 first part of the year
O=5 second part of the yr
I can't find what the S stands for just a guess Short shaft.

OK-thanks..I looked under later model chart.What does that mean?Canada Derated?Was this sold in Canada or US?I just filled the gear case.thanks.I am only hoping the old fluid had very very slow seep while it was stored(were oil stains on skeg where it may have ran down), as long as the seller was truthful?Will find out!

Thanks again.Guy said he bought it local new in U.S.He was telling me things that seemed legit except how long it was stored at a time.That varied..Hope he was not a big B-SER.Ran ok on muffs.Time will tell.thanks again.

Turn all the unknown`s into known`s. If it runs good and shifts gears put in a new impeller and reseal the gearbox. Both are fairly easy and cheap if you do it yourself.
