1985 15hp Johnson Thermostat

I'm having a time getting

I'm having a time getting the motor cover latch off. Trying to get thermostat changed. They leave you no cleareance. Any ideas on getting the latch bolt off? I really don't have to remove the power head to do this do I? Model J15RLCOB

"I've had the same problem w/ a 1986 15 hp evinrude. I may give Joe's suggestion a try, as I had a heck of a time getting the thermostat changed because of the latch, now can't get latch bolt back on"

The head gaskets are cheap and it dosent take much time to remove and replace it to do a thermo.
