anybody know the spark plug # and gap for 1985 15 hp evinrude.its pretty cold blooded on start up but fine after that, hoping plugs would be the cure.

Alot of guys having fuel delivery issues probably because of ethanol. Hard cold starts is usually the first sign. You can try turning the slow needle out 1/8 a turn counterclockwise and see if it starts any easier. Another trick is to run it out of fuel by disconnecting it at the tank then pump the carb full of seafoam and let it sit overnight. Put some seafoam in the tank and the next day start and run it around 3000 rpms until the smoke show stops. Usually best on the water so you can run it WOT for about 15 minutes to clear the circuits. If you still have cold start issues you need to rebuild the carb and replace the fuel lines. It wouldnt hurt to check compression if under 70 psi pull the head and lightly surface it on a glass table and replace the head gasket. These are one pull start motors on the coldest days if running too lean you can damage the motor if you do alot of trolling speeds. Allways run it a little rich on the slow needle.
ok since im fairly new to outboards and I don't have manual ive got 2 external adjustments one on the front and one on the side.which one is for the slow needle?iuse amsoil quick shot in the fuel to help against ethanol and it keeps the fuel system clean.i have the new plugs now so next week on my days off I want to put in the water.it will be mid 40s.thx

The slow speed needle kim is talking about is on the carb and the needle is on the front. Should have the words rich/lean on it and kim is suggesting that you enrich the gas mixture by an 1/8 of a turn.

The other issue is to make sure your link and sync is properly set up. When you turn the throttle grip you will notice that a metal piece from under the flywheel (throttle cam) hits the roller on your carb to open up the carbs butterfly. On the throttle cam should be a mark. That mark should be in the middle of the carbs roller JUST as it hits the roller. If it is not, you need to adjust it. If the mark is too far to the portside of that roller, your motor will not be getting enough gas for starting and can be a bear to start.
