I am new to the forum and I posted this message earlier in the wrong place. This sould be a new disscusion.
I recently purchased a 1985 115hp evinrude. the motor was running great until it stalled in the middle of the lake. after getting it home I found out the motor was siezing at one position. I can free it up with alittle pressure and it will spin for awhile then seize again. I removed the power head and found the lower bearing retainer bolt where off and laying on the pan under the power head. Now I believe I will have to break open the case and check the rod caps and ring to see if this is the problem. If anyone has any experience with this I would appreiciate some input. I am also looking for a complete motor overhaul gasket kit including the bearing retainer bolts which should have been replace the last time the motor was work on.

"I have removed the intake man

"I have removed the intake manafold, the cylinder inspection plate, and the head. What a nightmare, The crank rod bearing was damaged and the needle bearing went up into the piston head. Now the piston and head is all pitted. Is it possible to replace the 1 piston, rod, bearing, and head. Or should I replace everything. I could really use some advice on this. I am new at marine motors."

"Replace only what needs to be

"Replace only what needs to be replaced, that is, whatever has been damaged. Dismantle the engine completely so that the crankcase is empty. Lay all of the damaged parts in one area and make note of them as if you were going to make an estimate. This gives you a pretty good idea of what you're up against dollar wise.

If that engine still has the VRO setup, I strongly suggest that you convert to premix OR purchase a new VRO when doing that overhaul.

If the cylinder head is damaged.... steel being imbedded into its aluminum surface by that needle bearing etc, purchase another cyl head.

If you don't have one already, purchase a factory service manual (available on this site) so that you do not perform any expensive mistakes (it happens).

Let us know how you're doing and we'll continue on from there.

Thousands of parts in my remaining stock. Not able to list them all. Let me know what you need and I'll look it up for you. Visit my eBay store at:

Thanks Joe the VRO has been co

Thanks Joe the VRO has been converted and I am planning on opening up the nightmare tonight. I will let everyone know what I found. I am taking alot of pictures of this project for future use. I will look on the store page to see what you have when I find out what I need. I need Patience

Well I have opened the crank c

Well I have opened the crank case. I found I need what looks like a torque socket to get the rod caps off so I can remove the pistons and crank for the inspection process. Do you Know what size this is or should I just purchase a complete set. I did not need to use one all during the break down.

"That socket is simply a long

"That socket is simply a long reach 5/6" 12 point socket, available at Sears, auto stores, etc."

I know what that saying is all

I know what that saying is all about related to boat owners.(B-break O-out A-another T-thousand) I removed my crank and pistons. Found the worst thing I could find. One of the wrist pins had been driven right threw the crank case housing and the #4 crank rod seat is scored.
I could use some direction on how to proceed. If I am going to own a boat I need to know how to work on it. I would really like to rebuild a motor. Is it possible to purchase a used motor and rebuild it. Using the good parts I have and replace the bad rod/piston for less cost than buying one already rebuilt.I know it sounds insane BUT !!! I was really getting into the rebuilding process. I can purchase a rebuilt power head for $1500 but they want a good core. I really need feed back.
