The engine takes a real long time to start up in the morning, having to make several attempts at high revs. after it runs for about 5 minutes at high revs, i can put it back in neutral idle and it will not die on me, but anything before that will. After I drive around for 30ish minutes I can turn it off and it'll restart with no more issues. Im just concerned about the initial start. It also has a dark blue green oily mixture pooling at the bottom of the top part of the engine. also if i run it too close to full for too long the overheat alarm rings. Any ideas?

Question to be answered.---Have you replaced water pump impeller every 5 years or so ?------Are you pushing the key in and holding it in while cranking it over for cold start ?----Have you done a compression test on this motor?---If so post the actual values.-----I am not sure where the ---" bottom of the top part of the engine "=== is.----A picture helps you get answers.

This is my 2nd boat with an outboard, I bought it a few moths ago but they previous owner said he recently replaced the impeller, not sure about the water pump. the start up I hold the key in while cranking it over. I have not done a compression test, and by the "bottom part of the top" I mean where the pistons are housed, right under the cowling just that main area. Don't have a picture at the moment, Ill upload one when I get the chance.

Im pushing the key in for roughly 10 seconds, giving it a crank, and it will catch but not start. Once I raise the revs then it will start after 2 or three more goes.

How would i got about doing a compression test? do I need a professional or can I do it on my own?

Key is pushed in and held in WHILE cranking it over for starting.-----The electric primer is a valve.----It is not a pump.-----Pushing it in for 10 seconds before cranking does very little to make the motor start quickly !-----Compression testing is simple with a $40 kit.

do you think compression is the issue? what are the values that i would be looking for?

To clarify i am pushing and holding the key while cranking it over for starting.

Im interested to know more about the electric primer valve, is it possible that its malfunctioning and therefore not releasing enough to get the engine started on the first crank?

Remove one of the wee hoses at the motor end.----Push key in and crank it over.----Fuel should pulse out if the hose.---Test is done.

After motor starts cold.----You may need to push key in as needed till motor warms a bit.-----The primer valve puts fuel directly into the engine.----This fuel bypasses the carburetor metering circuits.----The primer valve has been installed for more the 25 years on 9.9 HP to 300 HP motors.----A wonderful item when understood.
