" how do i know if my motor is a standard rotation or counter-rotating engine? what kind of starter do i need ? i replaced the starter and now the engine wont run , it fires for 1 second then dies- i think it may be turning the wrong way - thanks!! the boat is a 1984 I/O elite 166 wellcraft , with a ford v8 (302 i think) and a mercruiser outdrive - "

ALL I/O'S ARE STANDARD ROTATION. IT SOUNDS LIKE YOUR PROBLEM MAY BE IN THE IGNITION SYSTEM. TURN THE KEY TO THE RUN POSITION (NOT START) AND CHECK THE VOLTAGE AT THE + SIDE OF THE COIL. IT SHOULD BE 6-8 VOLTS. IF NOT, THE SYSTEM HAS LOST IT'S SIGNAL. TAKE A JUMPER WIRE FROM THE BATTERY TO THE + SIDE OF THE COIL AND TRY TO START THE ENGINE IF IT RUNS YOU MUST FIND THE SHORT IN THE RUN SYSTEM. ***YOU MUST PULL THE JUMPER OFF THE COIL TO SHUT OFF THE ENGINE.***
DO NOT RUN THE THE ENGINE THIS WAY FOR TO LONG AS IT IS DANGEROUS AND WIIL BURN THE POINTS. "

" the old starter was rusted internally , and all the contacts were really corroded,i cleaned and replaced most of them , but i left the ones on the coil alone , so it makes sense of what you are saying - i will clean those as well , this boat has an msd ignitin box , mallory distributer and "blaster" coil
- standard rotation - would the crankshaft be turning clockwise as viewed from the rear? your help is very appreciated boatrep1!!! "
