I have just bought a boat with

I have just bought a boat with a suzuki 115 1984 model. Is it a big deal to change impeller. I am ordering a manual in the AM. Any tips or hints? Has been sitting 1.5 years. Any suggesstions to start with before I do anything? Thanks Brad

"Brad, don't be impatient

"Brad, don't be impatient - wait for your manual, then follow it's recommendations for routine maint.

After sitting, I would change the plugs, lower gear oil, inspect the hoses and wires for cracks/splits/frays etc - and definately change the impeller.

Would also spray a bit of fogging oil (or even a 1/2 teaspoon of outboard oil) into the cylinders with the plugs out - then turn the flywheel by hand for a couple of turns just to get the lube around. It is probably pretty dry in there and no sense scoring a cylinder because of a slightly stuck ring....

General maint on an outboard is relatively easy. Just follow the steps and if you get stuck, ask here - quite a few guys can give advice..."

Thanks Graham for your advice.

Thanks Graham for your advice. These engines are a little different from airplanes. Thanks Brad

"Hi All I recieved my service

"Hi All I recieved my service manual (original suzuki)and I am a little disappointed in the amount of detail it provides.I disassembled the lower end to replace the impeller assembly, and found 1 of the impeller housing bolts broken off. Any Ideas? Is there any complications to removing the drive shaft bearing housing to help access to drilling out broken bolt? I have a lotta questions. Should I remove water tube, and does it have seals on top? The lower end of tube has an adapter with a seal in it. Are these available? Should I order bolts from suzuki, or can I use high quality bolts from a bolt supplier? Is it normal for the drive shaft to be grimmy and semi coked up with oil? When I think of more questions I will post them. Thanks for all your hints and help. Brad"

"Help!!!!! I removed the lower

"Help!!!!! I removed the lower end of my 1984 DT115 to change the impeller. Found 1 of the impeller housing bolts broken off. Drilled bolt and soaked with penetrant for 2 days. Try removing with ease out, until ease out brokeoff. Any Ideas? Thanks Brad"

"You don't need to remove

"You don't need to remove the carrier. Just drill out and reinstall with the correct bolts, it's a bear I know what your going through. Yes you can remove the water tube from the lower unit just stuff it back into the grommet in the power head, use a flash light to look and you'll see what I mean. Yes the grommets are available, and yes the grime you are seeing is the exhaust and oil residue from the motor, this is how it travels to get out of the motor."

"I made up a hardened steel tu

"I made up a hardened steel tube that fitted in the waterpump housing where the bolts go through, bolted it all on (minus impeller) and used the steel tube (which had a 3mm hole through it and sat in the bolt hole in the waterpump housing) as a guide to drilling a nicely lined up pilot hole. Went up in half mm increments until I could pull the old thread out like a coiled spring, cleaned it up with a tap and it was all good! I did the same with the 3 broken head studs it came with too."
