1984 quicksilver throttle control

I can't get the throttle only button to push in to disengage the shifter so I have throttle only
The throddle button on the shifter lever won't push in to disengage it from putting it in gear when I want just throddle. There is a Dent adjustment screw and friction screw on the shifter, does this affect the button at the bottom of the shifter? It's on a 1984 quicksilver shifter, motor is a 1984 90hp six cylinder

I understand your question and issue.
Like I said in my 1st response if the cable or cables are for some reason preloaded - in other words, an adjustment of either cable at the engine end is incorrect, it will transfer all the way back to the shifter & cause the button to bind.
Do what I said in my 1st post to verify if cable adjustment is causing your problem.
If it still binds, it's time to tear the shifter apart to inspect and troubleshoot. I have no idea what a "Dent adjustment screw" is.
