1984 mercury 60 voltage problem

I just bought a New rectifier for my1984 Merc 60 and the voltage reads 16.75 volts at high revs ...kind of high I think ...is there a voltage regulator also ? and where is it ? or is this after market rectifier junk ?

what you have is a rectifier only charging system....the output is unregulated....do you have a new battery in the boat?..is your battery a maintenance free or a gel battery?there is a known problem with these batteries on a rectifier only system....

Thank you for that info......battery was fully charged and yes its maintenance free.....so I guess its time to buy a new battery ......thank you sir

there is probably nothing wrong with the battery so dont trade it in..use it for something else...if you have the owners manual try to find a battery that matches it as close as you can...but make sure you buy a battery that you maintain and have to add water occasionally...a regulated system will read 14.8 or close to it when the boat is up and running...with a rectifier only system like you have dont expect your voltage to remain that low..but over 16 is bad for any electronic equipment you gave plus the rectifier will eventually fail again..the first indication that the rectifier is starting to fail is the tach acting funny...then the tach will read zero and if you look at your voltmeter then it will be reading just battery output..the rectifier (with the battery you have) may last 2 weeks or years....you will read all kinds of theories on here on whats happening with the maintenance free or jell batteries..the one i go by is that a old style battery has an internal discharge if the voltage gets too high ..the others will take whatever you put out....its common for them to peg a 17 volt boat meter..
