1984 Mercury 50 (4-CYL) Coil Test

Force the ignition system to jump a gap of 7/16" or better.---Coils in good condition will do that with ease.---Run with a timing light at full throttle ( on the lake ) good ignition will show an uninterrupted flash on the light --Test all 4 of them-------Are there running issues with the motor now ??
 
Sorry...I was so used to typing my motor in here. :rolleyes: It is reference for my neighbor. His 135 runs sluggish. He has had carbs rebuilt and other electrical components replaced. He wanted to know how to check his coils...to rule them out.
 
They're tricky to test since the ohm meter's voltage starts charging it up. I suggest you compare readings with the other coils and see if the the suspect coils have different resistance.
