1984 Mariner 99 HELP Again

"At Graham's recomendation

"At Graham's recomendation I purchased a Tiny Tach.

I cannot get the idle to 750 rpm's it stalls. The closest I can get is 850 and 750 in FWD.

I turned the carb screw out 1.5 turns and went from there. The motor is running rough and easily stalls. Plugs are good.

I believe what me be cofusing me is the idle set - which do I do first the mix or idle set??

Thanks,

George
PS I am getting old!!"

"set the idle mixture to obtai

"set the idle mixture to obtain the smoothest running engine, then slow the idle down, repeat. Do not worry about exact numbers here. Once in the water set the idle speed for as slow as you can but smooth consistent running engine. An 1/8 turn ccw to richen mixture might be required if the engine hessitates on take off"

"THanks!

The slowest I can

"THanks!

The slowest I can get the idle in the barrel is about 950 1000 rpm's - then it is smooth. As soon as I lower the idle set it FWD it stalls. The tach doen't seem to be much help - my ear works better.

Once in gear it has tremendous power and goes up to right up to 5000 rpm's.
Thanks,

George"

At this point I believe I will

At this point I believe I will get in the water and adjust both carb and idle. While it is close it is still a little rough. The best Idle speed ZI can get is 1000 rpm's and it fulctuates between 950 amd 1100. I realize that it is an old motor and the numbers may not still apply.

"set the idle mixture first, t

"set the idle mixture first, then drop the idle, then reset idle mixture and drop the idle. If it won't go gelow 1000 then something else is wrong. The idle mixture ports are very small and may be clogged. They are located behind the carb butterfly, 3 or 5 holes. Don't rev it without a load on it."

"What is the best way to clean

"What is the best way to clean out the idle mixture ports? I can pour Sea Foam down the carb. I did this after the winter; also add it to the gas.

Can I spray some carb Cleanr into the throat?

Thsi is driving me nuts I started it now and it is running very fast 2500 rpm- had to adjust it down again.

Thanks,

George"

"removal, dissasembly, and com

"removal, dissasembly, and compressed air, maybe a very fine wire. Are you sure the carb is going back to the idle stop. nothing its hanging up on?"

"I would just clean it myself.

"I would just clean it myself. Removing it is the hardest part. Once removed turn the carb around, look at the back of the butterfly. Open the butterfly just a bit and there should be some fine drilled holes. Blow through those with carb torn down, if you have any fine wire gently stick it in each hole. Find the main jet and clean it. There is a possibility you are drawing air in from somewhere causing a lean condition (vacuum leak). But if the fellow says he'll put it back together and not melt anything, well have at it."
