I went to put on the new impellor ( water pump ) and when I was disconnecting the shift shaft at the rod connector, the upper rod came out of the shift assy. in the upper end by the block. dont know if it was welded or just snaps in. how would someone suggest that I get it back in there. Do I need to tear down the whole assy. at the top and put it in from up top with the housing tore down. God I hope not cuz its ready to go back together and I cant seem to get the upper shift shaft in the little hole using a flash lite in one hand and trying to maneuver the rod with the other. Please help so I can go fishing this weekend!!! THANX A BUNCH

Re: 84 mariner 25 hp problem

Is this a Yamaha built Mariner?

The Merc/Mariners upper shift rod is connected to the shift cam by a pin which is inserted "horizontially". This design means the shift rod moves "up and down" to change the gears.

The Yami/Mariners upper shift rod mates "vertically" to the shift cam but is fastened by a little screw that is threaded into the top of the rod (vertically - so a threaded hole in top of the rod itself) - the screw goes through the top of the cam and fastens into the rod with the cam sandwiched in between.

In the Yami design the shift rod is twisted clockwise or counter-clockwise to change gears.

ser#695s022638 looks like the upper rod has a nub on the one side with a small cotter and washer on the otherside. what concerns me is it looks like it was welded. can I get to it by taking the rest of the leg off? my manual shows the shaft being external at the top which mines completely internal going into the whole foot and leg.I think when I was unthreading the coupler to get the lower shaft undone it came apart up top. Thanx for the input. As always your the bomb!!!!!

Re: 84 mariner 25 hp problem

If the upper shift shaft looks welded at/near the cam there is a good chance a previous owner "broke it" at some point.

The whole purpose of the two piece shaft was to alleviate the need to get at the upper end for routine service of the lower unit.

Unfortunately, if the "fix" is now longer working you may have no choice but to pull the powerhead (which really isn't as big a job as it sounds - you leave it 99.9% intact) and repair or replace the upper shift shaft as necessary.
