1984 Johnson double firing powerpack?

I attempted to time my 1984 Johnson 40HP engine. Hooked light to top plug wire, timing good. although it seemed to fire on opposite side of flywheel as well. Then hooked pickup on light to bottom spark plug wire and timing mark showed as correct also. Is this common?

Runs good wide open, skips and shakes up to 2000 or so rpms. Was a lot worse until I carefully adjusted linkage and replaced obvious reed plates. Two or three reeds had a 1/16" gap (standing open). Seems to use a lot of fuel as well.

Sounds like you might have a power pack going bad.
