" A few years back, I bought this '84 115 Johnson from an outboard mechanic who rebuilt it. The seller told me that he had disconnected and removed the VRO system as the early units had a high failure rate. So I have just been running 50:1 gas through it, but it does smoke a bit at idle. Is there an improved VRO system that can be installed on this motor? What am I looking at for cost? (I'd need all the parts -- the tank, pump, etc.) Thanks for any advice... "

" I had the same situation with an '87 9.9hp Evunrude. I had the recall and repair, but was always uneasy about the thng. I simply removed all the auto oil mechanism from the tank and run it at 50:1. Problem solved, no more wondering "is it working and lubricating"?

"Brent.... To change everything back to the VRO setup will be costly. The VRO alone is in the area of $300.00. I've found the later model VRO pumps to smoke quite a bit, which makes me wonder about your mentioned concern (smoking at idle). I haven't heard of anyone encountering that problem after they've eliminated the VRO system.

Note... Trolling with the higher hp engines (yours) will result in having them load up and smoke. Trolling with a VRO setup will not eliminate that problem.

Thanks for the tip. Sounds like converting back to VRO is a bad idea. I had assumed that the VRO would use a leaner mixture at idle, making this a less smokey troller. Of course for the cost of replacing the VRO, I might as well buy a kicker motor.

" Joe,

I am looking at a boat with a 1999 Johnson 115 SPL. I do not know if it has the VRO oil injection, but if it does, do you know if it works well or needs to be disconnected? I believe it is a carborated engine, because if it is a FICHT I probably will not buy it. I am going to test ride the boat tomorrow. I will find out if it carb or Ficht. "
