"dropped the baja into the water today and found the tell tale was barely showing water at an idle...any special tricks/tips on getting it pumping good again??also going to drain the lower unit oil and hope it is just oil,no water mix while it's apart....i've done a few water impelers on a couple of old 70's mercury 80-90 hp motors,no tilt or trim on them,so i haven't a clue about the evinrude...and what's the best oil for refilling the lower ??fill to runs out of fill hole ??thanks for the info and your time,mark"

"Dropping the gearbox: Unscrew the lower unit bolts, do not forget the one under the trim tab, take out the screw holding the shift rod on port side under the carbs. Replace the o-ring on the driveshaft when putting it back again and grease the splines with moly grease.
I allways used the HPF OMC oil.
Do a thermostat check before you take down the lower unit. If one or both the thermostat is open it may be difficult to get up the pressure at idling and you may have difficulties getting a smooth low idle."

"Let the engine run at idle an

"Let the engine run at idle and put your hands on top of the cylinder banks. The temp should be even and close to what makes you burn the hands (be carefull). Rev the engine up to around 2000RPM, the temp shall DROP! This indicates you have enough pressure to open the relief valves. If temp is uneven at idle or engine feels cold, termostats are 'open' and needs to be replaced. If temp does not drop when encreasing RPM, relief valves are stuck or not enough water pressure.
Both thermostats and relief valves are located at the exhaust assembly under the power head at the back,cover with 3 screws. If you try to dismantle be carefull, the screws may be rather stuck and the housing between the cover and block is made of nylon."

so it sounds as if it would be safer /easier to throw an impeler in itfirst and see what it does???that nylon section you mentioned sounds as if it can be a real problem....what are the headaches if the nylon snaps when trying to remove the screws???

"The nylon spacer will not snap, I mentioned it so You would be a bit carefull by using heat to prevent the screws from snapping! Change the impeller first and do the test sounds OK.
If You need to change the thermostats later be sure you have all needed parts available before You start the job."
