1984 Evinrude 30 fuel pump questions

Three seasons back (summer 2011), the 1984 Evinrude 30 on my pontoon was giving me fits. Some kinda garbage was clogging up the carb. I'd clean it, put it back on, get out on the lake and it would quit. This happened like 4 times. I replace the fuel filter, all the fuel lines, cleaned the gas tank, put new gas in. Drove me nuts! Finally pulled the fuel pump and found that the a gasket was disintegrating. Every time I cleaned the carb, the pump just shot more crap down the line. Rebuilt the pump, problem solved. Questions: How long should I expect the rebuild to last? Should I be doing it every X years to avoid having the problem again? Many thanks for your help.

If you installed a kit with materials for the fuel of today then it should last many years.

I put in a BRP/Evinrude-Johnson Genuine Parts fuel pump repair kit P/N 398514. That's all I know.
