1984 Evenrude 70HP Water Pump Question

I want to replace the water pump. My question is about the shift rod. Do I disconnect it at the top behind the fuel pump/filter before I drop the lower unit or do I have to partially drop the lower unit first? I guess another part of my question is the shift shaft one long piece or two pieces with a connection mid lenth or so?

It is one long shaft.---Disconnect under the carburetor ( 7/16" socket )---------------------DO NOT TURN THE SHIFT ROD, during your work.

The 7/16" bolt is on the Port side of the engine. Correct?

Correct, it is at the very top of the rod !!------------------It is a special bolt / pin that goes thru a hole in the rod.
