I have read alot about replacing the ball gears on my 1984 OMC and would like to know if I can just remove the nuts on both gears, pull and replace or do I need to remove the outdrive to replace the upper ball gear?

Welcome aboard !

Got enough room to get a puller on them ? You might have to take the drive off. On the trailer here is how i do it... drive fully down, i crank the bow down, place a piece of flat wood under the skeg / fin. Crank the bow up till the skeg touch's the the wood. Remove the rubber bumpers they pry off gently, mark them so they go back on exactly as they came off.. exactly understand !

Remove the four screws that hold the bushings Mark them they go back on exactly as they came off. Now with someone else cranking the bow up another inch or two the drive will just lift off the cradle. Spin the drive on the wood or drag it over just enough to get to the ball gears, tie the drive up to the boat. There will be enough play in the cable just be gentle do not pull on the cable at all.

Post back how you made out.

Do I have to remove the bumpers near the pivot trunnion and then remove the two bolts sitting behind those bumpers?

Yesterday I removed the exhaust housing cover and the (I believe its the vertical drive) came down but didn't fall but a few inches - but my son and I put it back into place and bolted it back on - is there anything more I need to worry about? I believe that the forward/reverse gear that sits on top just under the exhaust housing is aligned properly. There is a slight movement when I turn it side to side - a little free play.

yes the trunion caps 2 screws on each side. Under the caps are bushings with holes in them the split goes straight down with the drive fully down.

Well I got the drive to the side but couldn't get the bolt off in the center - the entire gear spins with the nut. I tried some vice grips and wd-40 but they didnt budge - any other tools that could be used>?

I always use a impact wrench to remove and a torque wrench to tighten, check manuel for spec's & use the "Green .loctite" when replacing nut.
