" I have a 1984 90hp Mercury that is "coughing" or making a "splat" sound. I thought it was my #1 spark plug(firing order:1,4,5,2,3,6), so I replace it. That wasn't the problem. Funny thing was, when I removed the wire leading to this spark plug, the "coughing" stopped. I then switched the #1 spark plug wire with the #3 spark plug wire (yes, both ends) to see if my #1 wire was bad. No luck. Lastly, I added more straight gas to my tank thinking maybe my mix was to rich b/c the engine has an oil/gas smoke. Still no luck....Any suggestions, anybody? "
