1984 70hp evinrude upgrades

Hi guys, I have several components of later model 3cyl 60hp. Can I use them to upgrade my 84 70hp, For example I know I can upgrade the spark plugs as well as the VRO but I have stator and cdi from later models. All the parts seem to fit if I want to. I also have a complete wiring harness. Where can I find this type of info? The parts guide doesn't seem to give me the whole picturE of what upgrades I can do.

You need to look up parts by model number.if the 60hp part number is the same as the 70hp part number the parts are the same.

86-88 60 hp motors are the same as your motor. After 86 they prop rated the 49 cid 70 hp and downgraded it to 60 hp. The 89 and later is a completely different block with 56 cid displacement, they are also prop rated. It is doubtful you would see any performance increase. If you want more performance buy an 86 or later 70 hp.

Not looking for more power. I was just hoping for more stability at low rpms for trolling and what not. Seems the VRO2 is a significant improvement despite it's problems with ethanol fuel in the early years. If I can use the newer cdi and wiring harness I can plug in the vro2 I have installed on the 84 and actually be able to use the pump the way it's meant to. I think it will work. Thanks

The VRO2 is obsolete the latest version of that pump is called the OMS. There is no newer cdi for that motor. The later ones incorporate S.L.O.W and fast start features. I consider neither of.those as improvements. None of the things mentioned will improve your idle. 78- to around 1990 pretty much used the same CDI. What changed was the stator and timing base design in 88 but still used the same CDI. If you want to improve your make sure your the general health of your motor is good.
