1984 70 hp johnson powerhead replacement

can ayone tell me what years powerhead would interchange with my 1984 70 hp johnson power head i have.
i have found a 1975 but am not sure if it will swap.

The 1975 will fit , the latest ones up to 1988 ( 60 HP propshaft rated ) are your best bet.---Better quality crankshaft / pistons used in the later models.---------Compression test is a must before handing over the $$$$
 
i have also found a 1985 power head but i was told it would not bolt up as there was a split of some type between 1984 and 1985
i think he said something about the crankshaft splines
 
There is LOTS and LOTS of mis-information out there.----------The spline on the older style block ( like yours ) did not change untill after 88.----There was a new style block ( bigger displacement ) that came out in the mid 80's .-----Lots of motors are represented as being newer than what the are.----Sellers and buyers generally do not know all the details of what fits what.---Best to get pencil and paper and compare part #'s for various model # right here on this site !

The newer style 70 HP block with bigger displacement came out in 1986.----Blocks like yours were marketed as 60 HP models till 88.------Research on your part will tell you what fits what.
