Hello there!
I am a newbie in boating. I have spent some time doing some maintenance in my outboard (J60ELCRE) Johnson 60 HP 1984 after it was seating for almost 2 years, I just bought the boat with this motor. I replaced the water pump, the seals of the lower unit close to the water pump, spark plugs are new (Champion L77JC4), put new spark plugs wires, rebuilt the fuel pump, rebuilt the prime valve (solenoid), took out the carburators and cleaned them. The motor starts very well (not like a car but pretty easy) the problem is that when i am going to put it in gear it stalls some times, other times i can shift it but does not go, it is like is idling, some times gets some more RPMs and goes back to low RPMs, it has no power, all this with WOT. I have been reading here and in other websites but havent found an explanation to something like this. While in the water i tried to adjust the timing, thinking that could be it but didnt make any difference. The gas is fresh from today, the mix is 50:1 as recomended in the manual.
Please, if you have any suggestions let me know, any help will be very appreciated.

Boris.

I removed them and cleaned but only clean the bowl and checked visualy, didn't do a deep cleaning, so, should I take timing out of the ecuation?

The timing on your motor is fixed at the factory and really should not need adjusting for the life of the motor.---------What are the cylinder compression numbers ??

Sorry i couldnt respond earlier!
i havent done that test yet. The last time i used the motor it was working fine, it moved the boat very easily and fast. I will check the compression, if i can, tomorrow, and i wil tell you the numbers. I will take the carbs out and will clean them better, I will buy a carb cleaner spray to do it.

The # 1 thing to do on the carburetors is to remove the high speed jets for cleaning.------They are 5/8" long and screwed into the float bowls.

Hello again!
whent to check the motor today and found out that it is working on one cylinder only, seems to be a bad coil, so far, i will get both cylinders working and will see if keeps doing the same.

Hello there!
I finaly got the motor working, it was a bad coil and the other wasnt in very good condition, now is working fine, as should be,
Thank you for your help anyway.
