1984 50hp stator question

merc50hp

I just inherited a boat that has a 1984 50hp merc on it my buddy that gave it to me said he had a mechanic look at it and discovered that the stator is bad. I dug into it today and can see that there are just two wires on the stator tha thave corroded out and sounds like this is common in this model/age. couple questions can i just repair those two wires and the stator would work? Will a stator from a 1984 75HP mercury work on this engine i have parts lying around that could use if possible. the serial on the 75hp stator is 398-5454A26 and the stator in the 50 hp engine now is 398-5919A6.

thanks in advanced

I repaired the stator wires on my '69 Merc800,I had to go to within 1/4" of the stator itself, soldered in fresh wire, heat shrink and it still works,10yrs later.
You could cross reference the CDI stator,if the CDI part number replaces both OEM part numbers,it's a fair bet the 75 hp will work on the 50 hp.
And just for giggles I googled the part number you supplied for the 50 hp and it comes up as NLA for an older 50 hp,'79 or thereabouts.
That tells me the stator has, sometime been changed for this on as the part number for both an '83 50 hp and '84 75 hp is 398-5454A26 http://www.marineengine.com/parts/m...-and-up-usa/flywheel-stator-and-ignition-coil http://www.marineengine.com/parts/m...-up-usa/flywheel-ignition-coil-and-switch-box
