i have an 84 model johnson 25hp..when trying to start, it will drag as if battery was low but it is fully charged an starter is good as far as i can tell..plus every 4 or 5 turns of the key it will spin fine for a few seconds then it will start to run down again as if battery were low. can any one give me a heads up on what to try or what might be wrong ,thanks for all the help

Re: 25 hp johnson starting problems

The starters on those motors are easily damaged by too much ( too long ) cranking.-----------------The bonus is they are easy to take apart to inspect and repair.----------------------Sounds like it just may need new brushes.---------Easy to do , trust me.

Probably the 'worst' of all Evinrude/Johnson to do a starter job on!!
You must remove the starter bracket first with starter attaced.

Re: 25 hp johnson starting problems

The starter motor itself is easy to repair.-----------For an individual at home the labour is not a concern.----------I do these all the time $ 7.50 for a set of after market brushes.-------------Like I said easy to do.

Re: 25 hp johnson starting problems

thanks for the info on starter fix, how does the starter come out of the bracket..one other question ,would the solinoid have any thing to do with the motor draging while trying to start

Re: 25 hp johnson starting problems

Take the bracket off.--------------Then it will be obvious how it comes apart.--------------Solenoids are usually OK.--------------If this motor ( 84 model ) has been used regularly it is time for new brushes anyway and a good experience. Proud also that you did the work yourself as opposed to paying a shop to install a new starter at $80.00 + / hr.
