I've got this motor is operated by controls on my pontoon boat.
It's got a grind going into reverse. Last owner didn't worry about it but I would like to fix it if possible.
Forward makes no noise.
No bad shavings in the lower end oil. Changed it when I got 2 summers ago and again this last fall.
I've got a manual coming for it as I'm planning on doing the impeller next month.
What should I look for causing the grind?

Are you easing it into gear , yes or no ?-------" granny shifting " in a no no.----Put it into reverse with a quick firm motion of the control lever.
 
Actually it makes noise both ways.
Fast shift it makes a hard clunk, slower makes a grind but no bad sounding clunk.

Forward is silent no matter how its shifted
