1984 115hp johnson ( how to check stator and rectifier )

my volt gauge is showig 8-10 volts and battey is not chargeing, how do i determine whats the prob? stator, or rectifier??
 
Start off by getting an OMC factory service manual and a good volt/ohmmeter. A service manual explains it very well.
 
Kind of simple but you do have to think through it. The electricity going to the rectifier from a stator is a/c. What a rectifier does is convert this to DC voltage. If you've got voltage going into the rectifier you may have a good stator. I don't know how the pro's do it but I tend to disconnect the battery cable while it is running then check the voltage output. Sparks can cause a diode to blow so I do not reconnect with the engine running. Another way is to check battery voltage before cranking then again when the engine is revved up to a high enough rpm for the output to increase above that of the battery. Check the voltage at various rpm's. On some engines the alternator/stator won't put out until far above idle... and some won't put out unless they're fed at least 5 volts.
