Thanks! That was much easier than an Evinrude, I'm used to having to disconnect shift linkage before removing my Evinrude lower unit.Just pull the lower unit off ----There is nothing to disconnect on the shift rod.-----It is a splined joint.

I'm having problems getting it back in. I have a black cylindrical that's about 3/4 inches long with splines inside, I also have a rubbery piece of close to the same dimensions but tapered a little. Where do these go? I have them on the spline at the end of the shaft. I isually take pics when i remove something, I completely lost track of where they were from. It feels like I'm bottoming out with abouyt an inch to go. I can still see the end of the shift spline on the lower unit
