1983 Mercruiser 470 (3.7L) overheating issue

I took this 1983 Lund American w/ Mercruiser 470 (3.7L) in on trade for another boat that I had restored. Anyways, it didn't run at first, so I replaced the points and condenser and now it's running, fairly decent after setting the timing and such. I took it out on that lake for the first time, but it overheated within the first 5 minutes. It had steam coming out from under the doghouse that first looked like smoke. I shut it off and opened the doghouse all ready to put a fire out, but it had blown water/coolant out of the "radiator" cap. Now what I'm wondering is with the water coming out of the cap, is the cap bad as it didn't hold the spec presser, or a thermostat, or a water pump, or an impeller problem. I turned a wrench in the army and many years as a mechanic, as well as managed a couple of shops. I had a stroke in 2013 so my memory has been affected by it, and as the saying goes, if you don't use it, you lose it. That along with I'm not used to having 2 cooling systems, one controlled by the water pump (like a car/truck), and the second the Impeller sucking up lake water (the one I'm still learning about).

All being said, what's my first go to, and then after?? Marine engines etc are new to me, so please be gentle, as my knowledge is with wheels, not what floats in the water, lol.
