1983 Mariner 15hp questions
Hello to all, I'm new here. I'd like to introduce myself. In south GA, do some saltwater(mostly) and a little freshwater fishing, hunting, mostly birds, just a little deer hunting with Contender pistols. The older I get, the more I'm learning about working on my own equipment, from the family trucks and cars to the lawnmower, to my guns. I'm no mechanic, but I've enjoyed learning more and more in recent years, and having fun and sometimes save a little money. Usually know if I have the knowhow and tools to do a good job myself or take it to a pro.
Have had a Boston Whaler Montauk for 25 years with Evinrude 70, but just sold it. Only one now is a Lowe 14' Lake Jon with Mariner 15hp, which I use mainly for duck hunting, marsh hen hunting, shrimping with cast net, and a little inshore fishing.
I bought the Mariner new in '83, I think it's an 83 model, but the owner's manual was destroyed years ago. IMO it's almost like new, but I'm looking forward to doing some work myself on it.
It fires right up in the water tank, but I'd like to change the 2 spark plugs. I assume just remove them, go to the parts house and get a like pair and install? What gap should I use?
Also, I just removed the prop, cleaned a little grass out, cleaned and greased the shaft, which looks new, and re-installed. I don't foresee any problems here, but let me know if I should be aware of anything.
Also just drained the lube out of lower unit, it was black but no metal specks that I could see, and re-filled with Yamaha lower unit oil from bottom until it came out the top hole and was new and clean, installed top screw, then bottom. Lost a little oil while installing the bottom screw, but think I'm O.K. Any way to double check the level?
I.D. plate on motor says: Mariner 15M 684C s 018642 Made in Japan
Is this indeed a 1983 model, and does it mirrow image any certain year model Yamaha?
This has been a great little motor, and I want it to last forever of course. Usually when I buy something it's exactly what I wanted, so I expect it to last forever!
Thanks for the great site, hope I didn't bore you guys too much. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Steve
