"Rapairable - no, or at least not worth it.
Cause? Probably no oil/lean or running extreemly hot, but in that case the power head should have gotten chocolate color! This is most probably result of old or long time problems! I would go after the one that sold the engine!"

"I am Seeing my young past at age 15 with a 1973 Evinrude 50. I forgot to put oil in the tank and blew the same hole in the same location. Ran up fine, then a loud POP and it it acted just like the key was shut off at speed. Too much money to repair so we got a used 70."

Thanks for the information. I

Thanks for the information. I purchased the boat used and the guy mentioned that he had done a carb job on it. Could it be that he had the carbs set wrong?

I did have oil mix with the gas. I had just purchased a plastic bottle with measurements for gas to oil mix. Running 6 gallons I used 16oz of Johnson outboard oil to get a 50 to 1 mix.

"Most probably the 'dammage' started when the engine was running with a 'defect' carb. The job itself was probably not the reason, but the state of the carb before repair!"

"Try a used powerhead. Look on Ebay, or try a marine salvage yard. Much cheaper and easier than a new motor."

"Hi there.
I have had the same exactly situation. I found (the hard way) that in these motors the crancshaft passes too close to the block. In my motor, a piece of piston broke off and eventually got stock between the crancshaft and the block, making a hole that looks exactly like yours. I think it is possible that whoever was replacing your carb, dropped something inside the motor. Otherwise, if your connecting rods are still connected to pistons, there is no way this kind of damage can be done.... It has to be a loose piece of something.

I ended up buying a used block. Welding was almost the same price.
