So I’m having and issue with a this motor that I just bought from a co worker. It’s a 83 Johnson 4.5HP outboard with a pull sting starter. He sent me a video of it running before I bought it and I tried testing it before I took it out fishing. I was able to pull it a few times and it started to run. I went to start it again and the pull string didn’t retract. When I popped the cover off, I noticed the recoil spring end that runs though the notch to the outside pulley housing had straightened out. I assumed well it’s a 43 year old motor it was probably just old. I bought a new one and installed it with the method I’ve found online with ratcheting the flywheel with tension on the pulley to wind it in that way. On the very first pull of the string this time it did the exact same thing. Pulled flat through the notch to the inside with the rest of the spring. I’ve read about possibly over extending the spring but i don’t think it’s possible because of how short of a pull I did. If any one could offer some insight that would be great. Thanks
