1983 Johnson 15hp shifting into forward

Took the new Craigslist craft out on her maiden voyage today. Powered by the aforementioned 15hp.

Anyways, I've had to tinker a bit already to bring this motor back... flushed out the fuel lines, re-connected the choke to the carb.... spark plugs, pull starter was sticky but fixed that, lower unit oil... etc. It sat for a little while. Lower unit oil came out crystal clear. Apparently paps changed it for me.

That being said, motor ran great on her test run - easy to start, idles low, pushes little 13" skiff probably 25mph or more. Only issue, after I ran her for a little bit, stopped and fished, then fired her up with an easy pull... motor didn't want to go into forward. It would go in reverse, kind of go in neutral, and only after screwing with the shift lever for a minute as it idled would it go into forward, and once it went, it went fine with no issues.

After it had trouble shifting, I took the boat and planed it out again, ran her WOT.... not slipping out of gear at all or anything. I had a black anchor one time (Mercury) with the fancy twist throttle shifting that would pop out of gear at anything above idle. Nothing like that here. Once it shifts, its fine.... just when you're stuck in neutral and reverse and it won't go it gets frustrating. Definitely an issue that needs fixing.

I've eyeballed the motor so far, the lever, nothing jumping out at me. Let me know what you think! Thanks!

Check the shift connecter between lower unit and exhust housing.----Notches MUST line up with holes before bolt is put in.
