Hello Everyone,

I was attempting to change the water pump in the my brothers lower unit, 1983 Johnson 150, today. We were able to get the lower unit off after several attempts and finally realized we needed to remove a screw holding the shift lever in place. My question is, now the water pump is changed how do I line up the shift lever. Every time we insert it, it appears it turns and will not realign with the screw. We tried for about 2 hours and finally called it quits tonight. Any suggestions would be appriciated.

Thanks!

Shane

You are not alone Buddy!!Are you shure it turns,or is it just not going into the slot where the screw gos through? This happens to alot of people including myself.Ok,what i do when that happens is i run a steel piece of wire down the hole where the shift lever comes up to shifterand i put it through the hole on rod making shure the bent end of wire is facing down so it does not catch on anything coming up through hole.Have somone hold just enough tention to keep it strait.I have had some of them move a littlebit and some dont move at all.It can be aggrevating sometimes to line it up,because it is in a tight spot.Good luck!

first you have to make sure that the shift rod has not been turned too many times , as that will throw it out of adjustment.------Do you know about this measurement ??---------Just put it up there and turn the rod with a long needlenose pliers ( you can see the rod in 2 places ) to line it up and put the pin in.

the shift rod is exposed on the midsection of the motor...look under the power head and you will see it. grap it with pair of vise grips. you and a buddy slide the lower unit into place and u can use the vise grips to guide the rod to the position you want
