1983 Johnson 15 HP water pump

run the motor see if the tell-tell is working.....(pumpimg water), let the motor run for a few mins, take a temp reading on the block should be around 165 degs F, or you should be able to keep your hand in the block without burning it.

Thank you coueytwo, I assume the tell-tell is the hole just below the powerhead. No water is coming out of it and the block gets too hot. Looks like I need a water pump.

you can blow air into the tell-tell hole and see if it's blocked, but if the motor is getting hot, check the water pump.

ok I have replaced the water pump and head gasket (due to overheating). Running cool, water coming out the indicator hole. I am concerned about water coming out a hole in the lower unit a round hole just forward of the intake. Water is also coming out of the shift rod transition between lower unit and pivot point.

Water can come out any open place on the lower unit. The round hole is a relief hole. As long as your lower unit oil does not look milky, then you will be fine. You should check and change the lower unit oil anyways.
Happy boating!

Most likely the rubber seal at the bottom of the exhaust tube is burned away causing more than normal water exiting where it should not. May not be a problem except that exhaust gasses as well may enter into the water pump as well.
Check that your thermostat is working properly!!! If not replace it, and not just remove it.
