1983 Evinrude 115 Shifting Issues

I have an 83 Evinrude 115 on the back of the boat.
Runs a treat off the muffs, but when in the water it does not have reverse

Confirmed shifter connections are tight at the top and moves everything around, if we adjust the trundles at the top we can get reverse in the water but lose forward.

This leads me to believe the shift rod in the lower unit needs adjustment.

Does this sound correct? Also, how would I go about adjusting it once I pull the lower off?

Drain oil and put in new oil first.----You need to adjust shift rod height.------Should be 21-27/32" to center of the hole in neutral.

You can undo the linkage and try doing it by hand see if you can get reverse. I have done that in the past then set linkage accordingly.

So started the removal today. Got the starter out of the way and still cant access the top of the shift linkage. About to remove the carbs and try for access that way.

My real problem here though is that sometime in the past, someone as done this and lost the bolt/screw for the linkage. Currently there is a bent galvanized nail holding the linkage together

Does anyone know the part number, bolt style or size so I can get a replacement ordered?

You will be shocked at the price of the screw / pin.----Make one from a 1/4-NC screw.-----You remove that screw by looking from the side OPPOSITE the starter motor.-----If doing this for the first time , removing carburetor may help !

Thanks for the all the advice.
I managed to source and order a new correct screw. World of difference.

My next problem now seems to be loss of tilt. We replaced the motor and oil and it worked great, but now doesn't want to function. The oRings for the release screw and fill port are gone. I think their letting too much air in as the oil comes out fully foamed every time.

I've looked online for the seal/oRing replacement so I can do them all but not sure what part number I need. I've found conflicting reviews on what motors they fit.

Your local dealer has the experience to help you.----The 25 year old wizzkid computer operator at AMAZON knows little about motors.
