Hello. My old bayliner is starting to act up a bit. The motor is fine, but whenever someone else drives it, they somehow overtravel the single shift lever, to the point where the handle is almost vertical on the downward side. This requires me to remove the shift control from the mounting area and restore it to it's proper position. Does anyone have a recommendation as to how to prevent this from happening? I hate to let anyone drive my baby anyway, but this seems to be the only soultion.

Well, I really don't see how that's happening unless something is slipping in the control unit. Sounds as if the splines on the shaft or handle are stripped. I'd check into that. If it's a plastic handle that's likely...your Bayliner probably has a HiLex control unit on it...Bayliner's weren't built that well..they used the cheapest components available. Only saving grace of these is the Volvo drivetrain...I've junked quite a few Capri models just to salvage the engine and drive for another boat.
