Resealing a '83 70hp Evinrude and I've gotten to the Shift Shaft cover. There appears to be an o-ring in the hole under the brass bushing. How on God's green earth are you supposed to change that? I could probably get the old one out but I don't see anyway to get the new one in.

I recently changed one on a J150. I oiled the bore and worked the o-ring in from the top...actually not too hard to do.

The only thing is...I hate to take the old one out and risk not getting the new on back in. I don't think it's leaking now but if I take it out and can't get the new one in, it sure will. I'm thinking I will just leave the old one there.

Putting a new O Ring on the shaft is very easy, also easy to reinsert the shaft back in. However you want to make sure that you have the proper O Ring to begin with.
